As a single mother of four and the founder of a virtual support-based business, I have experienced first hand the challenges and triumphs of building a business while raising a family. My journey has been anything but conventional and starting my own business wasn’t just a career move - it was a necessity. I needed a way to provide for my family while maintaining the flexibility to be present for my children. The traditional 9-to-5 setup didn’t offer that, so, I took matters into my own hands and created a business that allowed me to balance both worlds.
Running a virtual service-based business from home gave me the freedom to work around my family’s schedule while building something meaningful that provided me job satisfaction. This freedom came with its own set of challenges - late nights, self-doubt, and the ever-present juggle between deadlines and school runs.
As a female business owner, I’ve encountered my fair share of obstacles. There were moments when I felt I had to prove my capabilities more than my male counterparts and I have faced scepticism about my ability to manage both a business and a family. However, I turned those doubts into motivation, proving that women - especially mothers - are some of the most resourceful and determined entrepreneurs out there.
Financial struggles, time management, and the mental load of being both a business owner and a parent definitely test resilience, but I very quickly learned to set boundaries, delegate where possible, and remind myself that I don’t have to do everything alone.
The reality of being a single parent and a business owner is that balance isn’t always perfect. Some days are chaotic, and others run smoothly. I’ve learned to embrace flexibility and give myself grace. My children see me working hard, and I hope it teaches them the value of perseverance, independence, and chasing their dreams.
I’ve also realised that community is everything. Finding support in networks of other women entrepreneurs has been invaluable. Whether through mentorship, collaboration, or simply sharing stories, knowing that I’m not alone in this journey has made all the difference. Women supporting women is a powerful force. I want to encourage other women, especially single mothers, to take the leap into entrepreneurship if that’s their dream. It’s not easy, but it’s possible - and so worth it.
We need to continue breaking barriers, challenging norms, and creating opportunities for ourselves and future generations. Success doesn’t have to fit into a traditional mould. As women, we are redefining what it means to be business leaders on our own terms, while maintaining our role within the home.
This International Women’s Day, I celebrate every woman who is balancing business, career, and family. Your hard work does not go unnoticed, and your dreams are valid. Let’s continue lifting each other up, sharing our stories, and proving that women can do it all - on our own terms.
